Swing into Spring on May 21st

April 26, 2009

Thought I’d do a bit of promotion here. If you’re in or near Winnipeg on May 21st and want to enjoy some fabulous food and wine, why not come to the “Swing into Spring” tasting that I’m hosting at Mise Bistro.

Cheese @ Mise

March 24, 2009

I finally got a chance to run a tasting in the new Mise location (Corydon at Lilac). They’ve done a great job of fixing the place up and one of the bonuses is that they are running a store alongside the restaurant. A store that sells many varieties of great cheese. And they have a private room upstairs which is perfectly suited for wine tastings.

Cheese. Wine. I’m sure you see where this is headed. This post is a little longer than normal, but I really enjoyed this tasting and wanted to share my thoughts.

Much to look forward to!

November 26, 2008

Yes, it’s been a long time, but I’m going to stop making excuses. Those who know me will know why I’ve been quiet for so long.  And while there are no new tasting notes right now, you can expect a whole pile of them soon. I’ve got two good tastings coming up in the next few weeks.

Winnipeg Wine Festival 2008

May 4, 2008

Another year, another Winnipeg Wine Festival. The annual event is organized to raise money for the Special Olympics, and also to give people a chance to taste many many different wines. For $40, it’s essentially all you can drink (in 1 oz. pours) for three hours, and it’s a great chance to try wines that you may never see again, many of which aren’t widely available (if at all) in Winnipeg. All for a good cause too.

There are a number of events over the week, but the highlight is the public tasting held in the Winnipeg Convention Centre. And once again, I was fortunate enough to see the Festival from the other side of the table. Here are my observations from Friday evening’s public tasting.

Wine Festival 2007

May 18, 2007

Still recovering from working the Winnipeg Wine Festival last Friday. No – not too much wine (I drank water all night long to keep my voice together). Just the sheer exhaustion of pouring fabulous wine for hundreds of happy revellers. It’s always a good time at the Convention Centre when the wine is flowing freely.

Wine & Chocolate

February 14, 2007

In addition to last Saturday’s Old/New World tasting, I ran a Wine & Chocolate tasting on Monday, which is always lots of fun. If you look at them closely, there can be a lot of similarities between wine and chocolate. They can complement each other if you’re careful, but the sweetness and strong flavours can bring a whole new set of challenges to the table.

Pasqua Primitivo

February 14, 2007

I ran a tasting on Saturday with ten wines, comparing the Old World with the New World. The core of the tasting was a set of four challenges.
